Workout Reminders For Winter Runners

It’s January and the peak of winter season. This is the time when your fitness regimen takes a back seat, but in case you are what your friends like to call “a fitness freak”, then you ought to be taking more care of yourself. The basic reason behind it is that during colder seasons it becomes quite difficult for your body to react in a fashion similar to those during summers. The body becomes stiff and takes time to adapt itself according to every new fitness regimen you start to follow. Our experts share a few simple tips which will help you cope better with the winter.

Hydrate
The most common mistake which most runners do is that they minimize their water intake during winter season runs, as they believe the water loss from the body will be less and thus the body requires less fluids. But, this only makes their body more prone to injuries. Exercising causes dehydration, irrespective of the weather. So, carry a warm drink instead of a hot or cold drink, this will make your body adjust quite easily to the temperature.

Layer up or not?
The gist of winter outfit is layering, so you should put up more layers of clothing you used to wear during summer. But, when you are running you require to run light and add the least bulk as an outfit, thus you can go for technical wear or thermal wear. These are clothes scientifically designed to keep the body warm without creating much bulk. Buy some technical socks, not too thin or thick, a good pair of winter running shoes, buy one from a Sports Station Store near you.

Add more warm-up & stretching
Adding a little more warm up & stretching to your fitness regimen will only make you less prone to winter season muscle injuries. In cold weather, your body takes a little longer than normal time to get running ready.

Healthy diet
Try to avoid comfort food in winter as it will only accumulate fat on your waist, so instead of that you should go for other warm and healthy alternatives such as soups, green tea, etc.
